Prior to Training

ACCORDING TO VICTOR ANDERSON . . .

The following is what a person should be working on prior to training:

  1. Developing your psychic senses, including etheric sight. [See Psychic Development for more information.]

  2. Making contact with your Fetch. "The Fetch is not the same as the subconscious." Make contact, and begin working to become Kala.* [See Exercises for more information.]

  3. Learning to detect the presence of spirits. "Perceive first, then decide scientifically what you believe." [See Psychic Development for more information.]

  4. Contacting your Godself. "It's more than just your mind. Have faith in yourself and in your God Self." [See Exercises for more information.]

"Then reach out and you'll find the right teacher."

*Kala is a Hawaiian word meaning "the light." It also carries the meanings "to loosen, untie, free; to forgive." See Exercises for more information.

For those without a teacher, preliminary methods for contacting the Godself and Fetch can be learned through the study of Huna (where they are known as the High Self and Low Self). See Huna for more information.

MORE THINGS TO ACCOMPLISH ON YOUR OWN

  • Know your history.

Study the history of the Craft, and familiarize yourself with a variety of magical systems.

The Andersons created a book list for people who were interested in Witchcraft; Mandorla has also created a book list. Both can be found under Recommended Reading. Some of these books may prove helpful.

  • Be self-motivated.

The Andersons' tradition was never spoon-fed. It's important to be creative, inquisitive, and able to work on your own.

  • Connect with Nature.
  • A deep personal connection to the natural world and its spirits is essential to the practice and understanding of the Andersons' tradition. Study your own nature and abilities, and study the natural world around you.

  • Explore the folklore and magic of your personal heritage.
  • The magic and lore of your bloodline and your root-cultures are important ways to connect with your own power and the power of the divine.

  • Do the work regularly.

Develop a daily practice, and stick to it. It makes a difference!

CHOOSING A TEACHER

Victor's advice to "have faith in yourself and in your God Self" is very important.

You can rely on your God Self to assist and protect you in your search for a teacher if you keep Kala, remain in contact through prayer and meditation, and learn to accept the guidance of this highest and most perfect part of your self. See Exercises for more information.

Anderson-lineage teachers vary widely in approach, technique, and personality.

There are many lineages or branches tracing descent from the Andersons—some with significant differences in practices and lore. Feri lineages are not interchangeable, although some may be more compatible than others.

One handy evaluation tool when considering any group or teacher is Isaac Bonewits's famed "Cult Danger Evaluation Frame." Although designed for groups, it can also be useful in evaluating individuals.

What suits one person perfectly may be entirely wrong for the next.

It's important to pay close attention to your own intuition when considering a prospective teacher and lineage. If it feels wrong—it probably is! Work with your God Self to find the right path.
